Tokyo Ravens – Gadget Anime Review

Hautora was born into an ancient clan of onmyouji known for their mastery of all things occult. Unfortunately, he didn’t inherit the magical ability to see spirit energy, so he was doomed to live a normal life. At least, that is, until a mysterious girl from Harutora’s past returns to alter the course of his future!

This anime seems to be an Onmyouji anime! What might the ‘ravens’ in the title mean? The art in this anime is great! The male and female characters, the background, and the camera work is very well done. With attention to small details such as the clouds moving in the sky, I like works like this where you can tell that the artists are doing their best. The yukata girl and her whispering ‘If you get that…I’ll give you a kiss’ got me excited…the whole candy-girl kiss part was well done too! The ‘cut off your balls’ comment leading into a kiss made me wonder about the next episode!

A light novel anime adaptation. The story is one that seems a bit predictable and I can’t really get interested in. The title says Tokyo but it’s not actually in Tokyo. I was thinking it would be a city-centered anti-hero story, but it starts off with a countryside festival and yukata. The main heroine seems to have a klutzy air about her, so I’m looking forward to seeing her appear again. I’m tired of the whole ‘unreliable hero that girls are nice to for some reason’ bit, though.

The first episode isn’t set in Tokyo. I guess they are heading to Tokyo next. It seems that this is a battle-anime with Onmyouji magic. I thought there would be a triangle relationship to begin with, but doesn’t look like it. Otherwise, it seems that this is going to be similar to any of the other anime in this genre.

The title made me think that this would be a fancy anime, but I was wrong. There is magic and traditional families involved. Two points though…What’s with the blonde at the end? There’s something shiny with her head, then she starts talking about cutting off his balls, then ends up kissing him? She’s a character we can expect a lot from, I think. Secondly, every so often there are cutaway scenes with super detailed art. Was there a point to putting that much effort into drawing a dragonfly? The dog’s expression made me laugh, and I’m looking forward to the next episode.
