Yowamushi Pedal – Gadget Anime Review

Onoda Sakamichi is a rather timid, anime-loving first-year student at Sohoku High School. Upon entering high school he hopes to join the anime research club, but after meeting Imaizumi Shunsuke, a renowned cyclist since middle school, and Naruko Shoukichi, who swept the Kansai cycling championship, he ends up joining the competitive cycling club. There, his abilities as a cycling road racer awaken!!

The popular Champion Magazine manga Yowapeda has become an anime! The original is really good so I recommend it! As a fan of the original art style though, the racing CG at the beginning was a bit strange. I’m looking forward to see what they do with the CG in the anime though! The voice actor for the main character seems to be a newbie, but with the other main cast members being veterans, there is not much to worry about. Singing Hime Hime while cycling was cute!

I had heard the title before, but I didn’t know that the main character was an otaku. He bikes to school everyday on his mama-chari and can even bike to Akibahara! I enjoyed the mama-chari stereotypes in the first episode; thinking that no one is nearby and singing only to have someone pass, or going up a narrow hill road only to have a car behind you. When you’re singing on a bike and pass someone, it’s a bit awkward for everyone involved… His classmate is scary! Her profiling skills are just scary! She should give up biking and become a detective! This anime is enjoyable all around, so I’m going to keep watching.

That was a fast 30 minutes. Apparently cycling is a sport where newcomers can suddenly realize their potential, and the first episode shows the main character realize he can be a climber. The main character might not know much about bicycles yet, but I’m excited to see how he will go about learning. There is plenty of enjoyable small details and performances, such as the bonus scene where the rival(?) character is showering and starts to hum the hime song. I’m looking forward to the 2nd episode!

I was excited for the nice male voice talent in this anime. I haven’t read the original manga so I didn’t quite know what I was getting into, but it was fun! “I can get to Akibahara for free!” is amazing. I was partly nostalgic for that frugal motivation, and partly embarrassed that I now just find excuses to take a taxi. Next time I will just tell myself I can buy a DVD with the taxi fare instead! I think the voice actor of the main character is a newbie? His performance was good. Both the opening and ending sequences were good and not filled with too much anime cliches. I don’t have much experience with bicycles, but I’m excited for the rest of the story.
